WHAT IS THE AAMC PREview™ EXAM?

Formerly known as the AAMC Situational Judgement Test (SJT), AAMC PREview™ stands for professional readiness exam. Developed and administered by the AAMC, this exam greatly differs from the MCAT exam. It measures broader skills and personal traits, such as listening and leadership, across various competencies. You'll be presented with various scenarios—and you'll need to evaluate the effectiveness of a series of responses to each scenario. Your score is based on how close your responses align with medical educators' responses.

FACE THE NEW EXAM WITH CONFIDENCE

There’s a reason why countless students have trusted Kaplan for their exam prep—for over 80 years. Though the AAMC PREview™ exam is new, our experts have studied all available materials extensively, and have developed a program that prepares you to acquire, refine, and strategically demonstrate your mastery of the AAMC core competencies effectively on the exam.

AN ALL-IN-ONE APPROACH TO AAMC PREview™ PREP

Our On Demand course combines video lessons with test-like practice to effectively prepare you for this increasingly impactful exam. It includes comprehensive strategy videos, simulated exams with hundreds of test-like scenarios, detailed answer walkthroughs, and more—so that when test day arrives, you'll know just what to expect.

WHY AAMC PREview™ IS IMPORTANT

The AAMC PREview™ exam can help you shine in the medical school admissions process—beyond your MCAT score and grade point average (GPA). It allows you to present a well-rounded picture of yourself. With this test, admissions committees assess your understanding of pre-professional behaviors that serve as strong indicators of success in medical school. In the past, committees wouldn’t be able to assess these skills until an interview. Now, a good score on the AAMC PREview™ exam could help you land an interview.

The AAMC PREview™ exam consists of 30 scenarios and 186 items, with each item being a response to a dilemma that students may encounter in medical school. The number of items per scenario varies from about 4 to 8.

There are 75 minutes of testing time, plus up to 40 minutes of additional administrative time.

If you apply to medical schools that require or recommend the AAMC PREview™, you should generally take it in the early summer of your application year. Currently, the testing cycle runs from June to September.

The AAMC identifies 15 core competencies that are essential for success in medical school and beyond, divided into pre-professional competencies, science competencies, and thinking and reasoning competencies. While the MCAT exam tests your knowledge of science as well as your critical thinking and reasoning abilities, the AAMC PREview™ exam tests your pre-professional skills and your capacity to handle the challenging situations that arise in the life of a medical student.
